12 Month Wedding Planning Checklist | Milwaukee Wisconsin Wedding Photographer https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2021/5/12-month-planning-checklist-milwaukee-wisconsin-wedding-photographer Wedding Planning Checklist

This blog is to assist in planning your wedding from Today, up until your wedding day. Bonus item at the very bottom is a Day Of and After Wedding Packing and Checklist.

Remember, as you continue planning, I am here to help wherever and however I can. Being part of over 300 weddings in various capacities, I can play devils advocate for any situation or come up with new ideas that suit you as a couple.

Truly, I hope this helps you keep organized. If you need a PDF copy for printing, just let me know - LindsayStayton@gmail.com

Enjoy!

Wedding Planning Checklist - 1

QUICK TIP ON BOOKING VENDORS:

A minimum of 9 months out do you want to have all of your FAVORITE vendors solidified. Most small vendors are a one person or small operation. Therefore, dates get eaten up fast! Clients book anywhere from 6-24 months in advance of their wedding day.

Wedding Planning Checklist - 2

QUICK TIP ON INVITES/RSVP's:

You want your Saved The Dates out 6 months in advance and your invites out 3 months in advance. Remember to set your RSVP 30 days out so you have plenty of time to track down those no responses. All vendors that need a guest list will need to know a minimum of 2 weeks or 14 days from your wedding in order to ensure enough food and supplies are present for your day!

12 Month Wedding Planning Checklist 1

QUICK TIP ON YOUR DAY OF:

Schedule some alone time with your new spouse/partner. There is very little time alone on your wedding day and going for a walk, or making out in the alley should be part of your time. Heck, don't even ask your photographer to follow.

I always suggest this to couples because Brian, on our wedding day, noticed I was very very overwhelmed and asked me to step away from the party with him. We went and just sat in the Green Room at Anodyne to breathe before the larger portion of the night started. If we wouldn't have done that, we wouldn't have seen each other the rest of the night. I was off entertaining my portion of the guests and he was off entertaining his.

So, be sure to spend time alone together at some point. Need more tips on making this happen, ask! I am here to help :)

Day of Wedding Checklist/Packing

QUICK TIP ON VENDOR REVIEWS AFTER THE WEDDING:

It truly means the world to hear from our couples. Our biggest piece of marketing is YOU, so thank you in advance.

If you are unsure where to leave a review, just ask, we have plenty of suggestions.

Additionally, are you struggling on what to write? Just write from the heart and any favorite memories you have from working with the specific vendor you are reviewing. Personal stories are key!

Lastly, if you have anything negative to say, don't hesitate to let us know directly. Honestly, we would love to hear from you directly with any negative feedback so we can correct it or make it right.

The Gage | New Milwaukee Wisconsin Wedding Venue | In Progress Photos and Interview https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2020/7/the-gage-new-milwaukee-wisconsin-wedding-venue-in-progress-photos-and-interview "A gage is an item deposited as a sign of good faith, and, just like it's namesake, you can have full faith that your event will be nothing less than remarkable." -- www.thegagemke.com

The Gage is the newest wedding venue in the heart of West Allis (just outside Milwaukee), Wisconsin. Located off of 70th Street, it is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2020.

Ashley and Nina gave me an in progress tour of the space and some background details of the history. Keep reading for current pictures and the renderings.

Y'all this venue is going to be stunning! I suggest touring and booking ASAP. Dates here will fill up FAST!

Imagine the double deck in progress and then see what it is going to look like... yes please!

Born out of the desire to take what they learned in the restaurant and catering industry and bring events to life, The Timber Family (yes, it is family business!) decided to find the perfect spot to open a wedding venue in West Allis, Wisconsin. Which is a perfect location, 10 min. outside of the city of Milwaukee.

West Allis is being renovated all around The Gage. Including a hotel to be built across the street for easy guest access and accommodations. Not to mention, some amazing photo spots nearby, not only in West Allis, but because the venue is just off the highway, you can easily get to the lake, Third Ward, Walker's Point and the Milwaukee Riverwalk for photos.

The Timber family actually started and owns a restaurant a couple blocks away - Double B's Barbecue. Can you say YUM!? Side note: A wedding I photographed in December 2019 hosted with their food, and the guests drooled over it. Collectively, they have 30 years of experience in the wedding and event industry.

The Gage is set to be completed in Fall 2020 and already have bookings for the future. After touring the space, seeing the progress on their Instagram and the intended renderings, you can see why the space will surely be in high demand.

About the space:

"A little modern and a little historical, The Gage is a unique modern industrial venue located in the heart of West Allis. Featuring classic cream city brick, this 10,000+ square foot event space can easily host up to 300 guests between its lower level ballroom and loft. A stunning setting for any occasion, The Gage also includes bride and groom suites, a large catering kitchen and a 28-foot handcrafted bar." " -- www.thegagemke.com

The picture below is a view of the space from where the staircase ends. This is what your guests will walk into after the ceremony or cocktail hour on the upper floor. WOW!

A view from the head table during construction, and see below for the anticipated view. I am in love with the skylight!

Interview with The Gage Team: Nina and Ashley

How did The Gage come to be?

Nina: LOVE. I adore when two families come together and we get to be part of that. It is so beautiful and we are always honored to share in the moment with our food, and now with our venue. I tell couples all the time, our venue it the shell of your relationship, and we are honed to have it as your backdrop for the most perfect day.

Ashley: I always watch the groom to see his face for his first view. It gets me every time.

What is your favorite aspect of The Gage?

Ashley: The skylight. I love the natural light that it brings in the spaced then it almost feels as though our space is open air at night. It brings the entire space together.

Nina: I love that we are bringing the history back to this building. It was once a tractor show room for Allis-Chambers. We are working hard to preserve the space and even came up with the name The Gage after a tractor part to honor the history and tradition of this space. It is a true honor to be in such a unique space to West Allis and Milwaukee

What is your best piece of advice for couples?

Ashley: Do not stress about the little stuff.

Nina: Breathe, take it all in. You are getting married. You are not getting married to the venue, to the catering. You. You are getting married and that is the most important aspect of the day.

Overall, the photos of construction and renderings will speak for themselves. Stay tuned for final images of the space in a new blog post once construction is complete.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the post to see rental information and be sure to reach out to Nina and Ashley for more information. I promise you you won't be disappointed.

The picture of the upstairs didn't even do this photo justice, so I am going to just leave this rendering here:

Check out this staircase leading up the the balcony... I am just drooling and picturing a long train and or veil cascading down the steps. And, how perfect is this for rainy day or family photos when it might be a bit too steamy out. I can picture it now...

Ivy House Wedding | Milwaukee Wisconsin | Artery Ink https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/10/ivy-house-wedding-photographer-milwaukee-wisconsin-arteryink How would you describe Gloria and Mara's wedding....? The first thing that came to mind was ALL SMILES! Seriously, not only Mara and Gloria were smiling all day, but so were their friends and family. There were so many smiles, I only wish I could have captured them all!

I met Mara and Gloria of Artery Ink through our dear friends Kate and Cody from Big White Yeti when I started connecting with the Milwaukee Makers Market circle. And I am so glad I did. They became fast friends and I was beyond excited and extremely honored when they asked me to photograph their stunning Ivy House wedding.

First Look by Lindsay Stayton Photography

Because they are artists themselves, we had to go to Black Cat Alley to get some colorful photos along with some of their favorite artists.

Also, if you haven't checked out their amazing art, please do so at the link below:

Katy Perry by Lindsay Stayton Photography

To say that Mara and Gloria LOVE Katy Perry, is an understatement. They had Katy Perry Shoes, jewelry and their first dance was to the Katy Perry song Unconditionally. They have had the opportunity to meet her 3x, once they were flown out to Germany! So, naturally, when we were doing photos, I asked them to give me their best Katy Perry face (see the above photo for Gloria's version, and Mara giggling away).

As we continued planning their photo locations... we simply had to do a mix of nature and city. Mara and Gloria love the outdoors and hiking, so naturally The Urban Ecology Center was a perfect choice.

I was even more excited when they told me they were having their reception at The Ivy House in Walkers Point. I have been dreaming of photographing there since Milwaukee Airwaves opened the space. Because frankly, they are the best DJ's and Venue combination in Milwaukee.

You remember when I said that their wedding day was full of smiles, just check out every photo of their ceremony below... ALL SMILES THE ENTIRE TIME!

And of course, one of the best Neon signs at a wedding venue I've ever seen... " 'Til Death "is the perfect back drop for these two. Even during their vows, Mara said "I am excited to spend the rest of our time together on this earth and whatever comes next"... she was much more elegant with the wording... If I can get the exact wording I will update the post :)

Mara and Gloria were welcomed into their reception with a standing ovation, and cheers from everyone in the room. The smiles were prevalent!

This wedding was one for the history books and I am so happy and proud to have documented it form them.

Thank you Mara and Gloria for asking me to be part of your wedding day.

And a huge thank you to all the vendors involved:

Lindsay Stayton Photography | Your Family Historian | Photo Session Tips and Tricks https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/9/TipsandTricks-Family-Photos-Milwaukee-Wisconsin-Photographer HELP US LINDSAY!

I don't know how to prepare for our session...

Never fear! There are some great tips, tricks below.

You be you, and I will be me, that's where the magic happens.

How to prepare:

  • Make sure you are fed and hydrated beforehand! Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours beforehand and please don’t arrive hungry. Feel free to bring snacks if you think you will need them.
  • Make sure the clothes you bring are pressed, not wrinkled, and aren’t covered in lint/pet hair.
  • As much as you can, try to have a pleasant day so you arrive in a good mood, getting along, ready for fun!
  • if you are nervous/feel awkward and you do happen to drink, sometimes it's helpful to have a small amount of alcohol beforehand to calm yourself! Just don’t overdo it haha.

A candid family photo taken at a mini session in family homeFamilyphotography-Family-Photos-Professional-Chewbaca-Smiles-Familysmiles-ProfessionalFamilyPhotos-Candid-Real-Lifestyle-Inhome-Minisession-kiddos-children-kids

What to wear:

  • Wear clothes that make you feel confident/beautiful
  • Wear clothes that feel like YOU.
  • Neutrals and richer jewel tones work best
  • Avoid anything really bright. Ex: bright turquoise, bright pink, bright green, bright teal, bright yellow - Instead wear deep teal, army greens, deep burgundy/deep reds, mustard yellows, burnt oranges, blacks, grays, browns, softer creamier neutrals, etc
  • Solids are usually better, but some patterns can be ok. Avoid really tight/contrasted patterned lines that create a swirly moire effect in digital cameras. Men’s button up shirts often have tiny patterns/stripes that do this.
  • Take the location into consideration. Think about the colors of the location and the season and wear outfits that blend well with those colors!
  • Texture and layers add dimension! Like denim/leather jackets, jewelry, scarves (not too bulky).
  • If there are parts of your body you don’t love, don’t show them off! IE: don’t wear something sleeveless if you feel self conscious about your upper arms, etc!
  • Bring options! Have a favorite, but it's always good to bring backups in case something isn’t working well in front of the camera. Sometimes things look awesome in person but don’t photograph well, if that’s the case I’ll have you quickly change into a backup! I do have a pop up tent that is great for on the go changing.
  • Double check you have the right undergarments! Make sure you wear the right bras and the right undershirts that don’t show.

Some examples of coordinating colors and patterns for outfits...

What to bring:

  • Your outfits, plus a few backup items just in case. Don't overthink it!
  • Footwear that is cute but you can walk in, you can always change if needed
  • Cute jackets if it’s cold
  • Makeup for touch ups, specifically lipstick and face-makeup: coverup if it’s cold and your nose turns red, or something to make you less shiny if it’s hot!
  • Hairbrush and hairspray or gel.
  • Lint roller
  • Water/beverages/sacks if needed

Enlightened Brewery Wedding | Milwaukee Wisconsin https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/6/enlightened-brewery-wedding-milwaukee-wisconsin Sometimes when you meet a couple, you know it is going to be one kick ass wedding. Caitlin and Matt's Bay View, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hyper local wedding was just that and so much more!

I had met Caitlin and Matt previously while assisting at Goodkind in Bay View for a last minute fill in. However, we were able to reconnect when they posted on Facebook that they were looking for a Wedding Photographer. Several people connected to us through "Smallwaukee" brought us together.

Enlightened Brewery Wedding Milwaukee Wisconsin

As they started describing their wedding to me as hyper local in Bay View, I knew it was meant to be. They decided to get married in Humboldt Park and take pictures at the Saint Frances Seminary. Matt and Caitlin mentioned they first time they hung out were on the swings at Beulah Brinton Park. I couldn't believe my ears!

Ever since I started Wedding Photography eight years ago, I have envisioned a couple swinging in their wedding attire. I knew this was the couple to make this happen. Because come on, they first hung out on swings? Why wouldn't we capture that on film?!?! And, they even said during conversation... "when in doubt, we go swinging!". TOO ADORABLE.

I was even more excited when they told me they were having their reception at the new Enlightened Brewery space on Allis Street in Bay View. Not only is the space beautiful, but the owners Tommy and James are some of the nicest people in Milwaukee! They were the very first wedding to host here, I cannot wait to photograph more!

fête of Wales | New Wisconsin Wedding Venue | Interview with Katie Heltemes https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/5/fete-wales-wisconsin-wedding-venue fête, (pronounced fate), is the newest wedding venue in South Eastern Wisconsin. Located in Wales, fête hosts a bright airy feel in the hall with dreamy and charming surrounding scenery of established oak trees, lush meadow and prairie grasses all overlooking the stunning pond.

"fête will offers premier, one-of-a-kind space suited for weddings, corporate events, private parties, community activities, and other social outings. Our clients and their guests will feel at ease" -- feteofwales.com

fête of WalesThe Stunning fête of Wales from the entrance

Born out of our own frustration planning their weddings, native of Wales, fête owners Katie, Nicole, Nick and Steve discussed every detail prior to starting the build.

"We took a lot of advice from people. We have seen the fruits from that. It was a lot of legwork upfront, and took more time. However, it really was able to allow us to make it our own and really." Said Katie Absolutely nothing seems to go with out thought and careful planning. "Almost everyone who has come through says 'Wow, you have put a lot of thought into this'. Because each doorway is placed just so, with access to specific rooms help maximize flow. We looked over the floor plans for hours and talked it all out."

Once they settled on floor plans, Nick and Steve started swinging their hammers and jumped right in. Not only are they owners, but they have had a hand in building fête.

Floor plan for fêteFloor plan for fête of Wales, a birds eye view of the inner workings.

Interview with Owner, Katie Heltemes:

How did fête come to be?

It was Nick and Steve's idea to build fête. We felt nickel and dimed for every penny of our budget and we wanted to give couples a better experience than we had. Ultimately, we saw the need based on our own wedding planning, and there was not much for venues in Wales.

When we got married, we had to compromise on aesthetic or location.

View of bar and balcony.Floor plan for up to 250 guests More of the ceiling viewLook at those beams!

How long have you been in the events or wedding industry?

We (Katie, Nicole, Nick and Steve) are new to event industry. However, with a variety of backgrounds, Speech Language Pathologist, and the others varying in the Healthcare and Emergency services field we have all had experience working in crisis management. We are all used to life or death situations, so, we feel like we can handle events and weddings.

View from the balconyGuests can eat on the balcony or have a birds eye view of the party.

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

Being able to be with people you care about. When it comes down to everything, it is the two of you. Anything beyond that it doesn't really matter. I love seeing all the memories being made.

I also enjoy seeing all of the people come together and thinking , WOW! When will this happen again? Because so many people travel from so far away to be here to celebrate. Will this ever happen again?

Because, ultimately, it's the small things during your day, like having everyone you love under one roof.

Another view from the balconyLook at those Chandeliers!

What is your best piece of advice for couples?

We don't want couples to get so caught up in the small details, we wants couples to be sure to see the big picture. I suggest to remember to sit back, soak it in and enjoy, The planning process can be just as fun or successful as your wedding.

Try to appreciate the big picture of what is happening and not get lost in the details. It helped us appreciate our wedding and really enjoy the moments.

If someone wanted to build an event venue, what advice can you give them?

Don't rush. Rely on experts. Don't think you know everything. We relied on a lot of people in the wedding and event industry. Ask questions. Budgets are not unlimited, so see your version with in reason.

Milwaukee Yacht Club Wedding Milwaukee Wisconsin | Sarah and Alex https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/5/Lakefront-yachtclub-wedding-milwaukee-wisconsin-sarah-and-alex Sarah and Alex had a beautiful spring wedding planned at The Milwaukee Yacht Club. Blue and grey suits, navy blue wedding party dresses and pops of yellow flowers to really bring in the spring feelings.

Well, the Wisconsin weather had other ideas for their Wedding Day.

Sarah and Alex handled it so gracefully. I received a text message from Sarah the night before the wedding... "Are you ready to get creative tomorrow?" Boy was I ready! Check out the photos below for some spring, I mean winter wedding inspiration. I am so thrilled how dreamy the photos turned out.

Wedding Party Snowflake catchesA wedding party at the Milwaukee Yacht Club tries to catch snowflakes on their tongues while a freak April snowstorm hits Milwaukee Wisconsin on their wedding day.

The Wedding Party had a bit of fun and were catching snowflakes on their tongues!

Altin was the star of the wedding.

Wedding Day Sample Timeline | Wedding Photography | Lindsay Stayton Photography https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/4/weddingday-weddingschedule-weddingtimeline-photography- One of the biggest questions I get when I am working with a wedding client is, "How do I figure out my day of timeline?!?!"

Majority of people have never planned a large party, let alone a wedding for all of their closest family and friends. I get it, it is intimidating! You want to be sure everything goes just right, everyone is having fun.

There are a lot of resources out there from Wedding Wire, The Knot, A Practical Wedding, and so on. However, I don't feel these help you plan your timeline. The timelines online are so long that you delete things, sometimes you don't even know what they are for. Or it is so long it is intimidating and you think to yourself "Am I not doing enough?", "Am I missing something?".

My simple trick to keeping things organized is COLORS.

To me, as a visual person, colors are immensely helpful. Have the items that are pending or you are unsure of, in RED when the information is set, say your ceremony and dinner time, turn it BLACK.

As you continue your planning, anytime you sign a contract or determine a new time, add it to the schedule and turn it BLACK immediately! Then you know it is set. Additionally, this allows you to plan along the way and keep track of timing instead of trying to do it all at once.

Below I pasted a sample schedule for anyone to use. I have used this format from day one of wedding planning and photography and tweaked it to make it just right over the years. I hope it helps you keep your day of schedule on track!

Of course, the one below is a "small sample" of what is needed for weddings. Don't forget to include other vendor arrival and tear down times per the venue, contracts etc.

I keep this in a Google Doc and send it to my couples so we can all edit it together or anytime new information arises. What is great about the Google Doc, is you can send the link to your vendors and you can prevent them from editing it. You can select this option in your specific document settings. You can also email this to your family and wedding party.

If you want me to send you the sample in a Google Doc or Excel Doc to help you continue the amazing progress on planning your wedding, just contact me HERE.

Happy Planning!

Professional Headshots | Milwaukee Wisconsin | Sarah and Paul https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/4/professional-headshots-milwaukee-wisconsin-sarah-and-paul So, funny story... I have actually known Sarah and Paul for the past year. However, we just became good friends about 3 months ago.

I put an add out on the Bay View Facebook page offering up my photography last year. Sarah and Paul responded looking for a photographer for their new home announcement.

We met at their beautiful condo on the lake and spent our time walking, talking and realizing we all had in common. Sounds like a date, I know. I thought to myself, how do we be come friends? How do you become friends with someone as an adult? I felt a bit awkward, so I said thank you, and then delivered the photos about two weeks later. Never mentioning, "we should hang out".

Flash forward 10 months.

I was at Brew Fitness, my new gym, for their holiday party. I see Sarah and Paul there. Sarah and I exchange glances, several times. Then it dawned on me how I knew them, "Lindsay, you took their housewarming picture". I went over and reintroduced myself. We laughed about the awakardness and how you become friends as adults. Little did I know, they wanted to hang out as well but had no idea how to ask as well.

Now we are friends, and have gone to Bucks games, Milwaukee Art Museum After Dark, and hiking the Ice Age Trail. Gosh, I love Smallwaukee!

Recently, they asked me to take their headshots to update their Linked profiles. Check out their amazing photos below, we even snuck in a quick couples session with the Milwaukee Skyline!

Crail, Fife, Scotland Wedding | The Cow Shed | Kristy and Graeme https://www.lindsaystayton.photos/blog/2019/4/crail-scotland-wedding-cowshed-kristy-and-graeme Flash back with me, to 2014, Seattle, Washington.

I was traveling to photograph a dear friends wedding just outside of Seattle at Deception Pass. While I was exploring the city of Seattle, I met Graeme. He was traveling after a year of teaching Math in North Carolina, and we became fast friends.

While we explored The Seattle Gum Wall, Pike Brewing Company and hiked up Queen Ann Hill. Graeme explained to me that he had just broken up with a long time girlfriend that he was supposed to be on the trip with. She was actually staying somewhere in Seattle. Little did we know, she was actually staying Green Tortoise Hostel, our hostel!

A few beers into the night, I said to him "Don't worry about it, the next girl you meet, you are going to marry, and I am going to travel to Scotland and photograph your wedding". It was sealed with a handshake. My first thought: Yeah, right, I will see you on Facebook...

Flash forward 5 years to 2017. My phone dings, it's Whats App from Graeme asking if we could video chat.

Turns out, he is engaged to Kirsty, the girl he met three months after returning home from his Seattle trip in 2014.

He and Kirsty wanted to honor our handshake and have me over to photograph his wedding in July 2018 at The Cow Shed, in Crail Scotland.

HOLY COW, I get to travel across the sea to photograph a wedding! YES PLEASE.

The results were beyond my wildest dreams and I hope to travel again to Europe and Crail, Scotland to photograph another international wedding.

So, whose in?
